The importance of preventive health initiatives

An increasing number of members are unfortunately losing the ability to work. Hence, P+ has introduced a number of health initiatives to prevent long-term sick leave and disability pensions.

Still more members are unfortunately losing the ability to work. Hence, P+ has taken a number of steps to prevent long-term sick leave and disability pensions.

Unfortunately, we are witnessing an troubling development in P+. An increasing number of our members fall so severely ill that they lose the ability to work. The past 5 years, the number of disability pensioners in P+ has increased by full 66 percent - mainly due to stress, anxiety and depression. This is alarming.

It has significant human consequences when a member loses the ability to work - both for the individual member and his/her relatives. It also has economic consequences for the members of P+. In a collective insurance scheme, as the one we have in P+, the cost is ultimately borne by the community in the form of increasing insurance premiums when we must pay more disability pension benefits. In 2024 alone, we paid DKK 300 million, and this implies that the insurance premiums have increased for many members.

Investment in preventive health initiatives

The unfortunate increase in number of members who lose the ability to work is not a challenge faced by P+ alone. On the contrary, this reflects a broader development of society where many Danes are affected by especially stress, anxiety and depression. And we see that other pension companies are facing the same development.

This does not mean that we remain passive. On the contrary, P+ has over the past years gradually expanded it's preventive efforts with e.g. access to online doctor and psychologist as well as individual programmes addressing e.g. late complications after a concussion. We have done this to prevent long-term sick leave and increase in payment of disability pension benefits and to help members return to their everyday life.

It pays to invest in preventive measures. Not only from a human perspective, but also financially. In 2024, we spent just under DKK 10 million on our preventive initiatives which ensured a substantial double-digit million savings for the community - funds that had already been set aside for payment of disability pension benefits. We expect that our efforts will continue keeping the insurance scheme costs down, so that as much of the members' pension contributions as possible can contribute to growing savings.
