Group insurance

The group insurance includes a number of insurances which provides a basic security in the event of illness, an accident and death. The pension fund has taken out a group insurance with the following covers:

  • Lump sum death benefit.
  • Insurance in the event of certain critical illnesses.
  • Lump sum disability benefit.
  • Accident insurance.

The group insurance is a 1-year insurance. The Board determines the group insurance and the premium annually. In 2024 the premium accounts for DKK 2,648. The premium is paid through bonus, and the payment is not deductible. The pension fund notifies the premium to the Danish tax authorities annually. The premium is taxable income.

The insurance covers members who have not reached age 68, and who meet one of the following requirements:

  • You are paying contributions to a pension scheme with insurance covers. However, this does not apply to high savings pension schemes (P+, former DIP).
  • You are subject to non-contributory cover.
  • You are receiving retirement pension benefits without having been transferred to dormant membership.
  • You have reached age 60 on transfer to dormant membership.

You can read more about the beneficiaries here

You can find the Insurance terms here

If you die before reaching age 68, a lump sum death benefit becomes payable. The size of the lump sum death benefit depends on your age when you die.

If you have not decided who should receive the payment, it will be made according to the beneficiary next of kin applying from 1 January 2008. According to the Danish Insurance Contracts Act’s section 105a your next of kin are in below-mentioned order:

  1. Your spouse/registered partner.
  2. Cohabitant, if you live together and have, expect or have had a child together, or you have lived together in a relationship comparable to a marriage for the last two years before the death.
  3. Descendants (children and grandchildren).
  4. Testamentary beneficiaries.
  5. Beneficiaries under an intestacy: parents, siblings, nieces and nephews, grandchildren, uncles and aunts.

There are no restrictions to who you can appoint as a beneficiary. You can also erase a beneficiary – then payment is made to the estate. You can read more here

The payment is exempt from taxes and dues. When the lump sum death benefit is paid to a spouse or registered partner, there is no estate tax payable. If payment is made to children and/or a cohabitant through more than 2 years, the estate tax accounts for 15 percent. On payment to others, the estate tax accounts for 36,25 percent (estate tax and additional estate tax).

Payment is dependent on the illness being diagnosed in the insurance period. If you contract one of the critical illnesses included in the insurance before you reach age 60, an amount of DKK 150,000 becomes payable. Between age 60-68 the amount is DKK 133,000. The payment is tax-exempt.

The below-mentioned illnesses are examples of certain critical illnesses:

  • Malignant types of cancer
  • Thrombosis in the heart
  • Bypass surgery
  • Stroke

In the pamphlet Group insurance you can find a complete list of the critical illnesses included in the insurance. You can apply for payment here (through Forenede Gruppeliv).

If you are granted permanent disibility pension benefits, and you are entitled to the first month's pension benefit before reaching age 62, a lump sum disability benefit becomes payable. The size of the sum depends on your age when you are granted disability pension:

Age Lump sum disability benefit
Under age 45 DKK 250,000
Under age 62 DKK 150,000
Reached age 62 DKK 0

The payment is tax-free.

If your disability is caused by an accident, you may be entitled to compensation from the accident insurance. The lump sum disability insurance can be paid one time.

You may also be entitled to payment from the accident insurance if you are permanently injured or experience a dental injury due to an accident. The payment is tax-free.

In the pamphlet Group insurance you can find the terms and conditions for payment. You can apply for payment from the accident insurance and the dental injury insurance here
